A message from award winning Haida artist April White...

I invite you to view the artistic expression of my creative journey
that divines its embryo of inspiration from my birthplace and home,

Haida Gwaii.

The original purpose of art was to unveil a parallel reality that is visible only in our mind—educated in science and with a spirit drawn to art, I see the role of combining art and
science in my work as fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural understanding.

This world of my ancestors’ is breathtaking beauty and bounty woven with
the supernatural; a place where everything is capable of shifting shape and changing function.

Intuitively, I release the imagery through realism, surrealism, and formline by painting—traditional
transparent watercolour and acrylic; printmaking—in hand-pulled serigraphs and giclées; designing button blankets and vests; paper making—cedar bark, to make the substrate culturally significant; mixed media; carving—argillite, and now in a mentorship carving cedar; storytelling—transcribing my understanding to words.

The magic I feel is so vivid I can only hope to convey but a glimmer
so that you may also: smell and even taste the sea, beach and landscape,
celebrate and witness Indigenous culture in Potlatch ceremony, touch the
weathered cedar of totem poles and enter longhouses in ancient Haida
villages, cock your ear to listen for Raven.

With a click you can wrap yourself in a blanket of moss, as we explore
Planet Earth, North America, Canada, British Columbia,
the Pacific Northwest Coast, and Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai... Islands coming out of Concealment...
Islands on the Edge of the World… my art gallery on Haida Gwaii.

My great great Tsinii—grandfather is the renowned Saangga.ahl ‘laanaas-Sdast’a.aas Eagle Chief and Haida artist Charles Edenshaw and my great great Naanii—grandmother Daadens Yahgu ’jaanaas Raven Haida weaver Isabella Edenshaw. I strive to honour them.
Dálang an hl kíl ‘láagan—I thank you all with good words

Yahgudanggang—Respectfully,
April SG̱áana Jáad
