Loon — Tadl I, II, III, IV

Tadl—Common Loon is a member of the Gavia immer Clan. Tadl is a Supernatural Being and thus able to shape shift between the three elements of water, earth and sky.

When floodwaters submerged the earth, he looked up—then flew to the clouds and found a longhouse with an old man sleeping inside. The man awoken by Tadl’s prolonged calling listened as the intruder exclaimed, ‘There is no land anywhere.’ He then pleaded with the Sky Chief, to help restore the world. First the Chief gave birth to a being that looked like a tall man—who would become Raven, and then revealed two rocks and imparted explicit instructions. These rocks became Haida Gwaii and the North American Continent.

In flight, Tadl is striking with her streamlined profile, glossy black and white summer plumage, and white necklace, on her way to forage for small fish. Her haunting voice has distinct calls for communication—the wail is the most entrancing, used to regain contact with her mate.
