Varied Thrush — T’án

T’án—Swamp Sparrow—Varied Thrush is a member Ixoreus naevius of carlottae Clan. T’án is a year round resident of Haida Gwaii, and this shy Being prefers solitude. With a a slaty grey back and breast band against burnt orange breast, belly, and intricate pattern on its wings, this camouflage is as dappled sunlight on the forest floor.

The reclusive male sings in spring to defend territory, singing most frequently at dawn and dusk and after a rain. T’án’s elementary, ringing song may seem like sound without a source—long minor-key whistles repeated after purposeful pauses—the voicing sublime in the tranquil, cool, dark, solitude of its forest home. Only a sharp searching eye spots these elusive beings in their realm.

T’án forages for their young on the ground among dense thickets for insects in spring and berries in summer. Stories of old, tell of its often aggressive nature toward one another and other Beings in defence of their small feeding territories.
