All Alone Stone — SGaan
In Juan Perez Sound, Haida Gwaii sits a solitary wooded, dome-shaped rock islet about 120 feet high: All Alone Stone, guarding the entrance to Burnaby Strait. It was named by George M. Dawson in 1878, who felt that it was a good marker for vessels when entering the strait.
All Haida Raven lineages have Killer Whale—SGaan as a crest. The presence of multiple dorsal fins—depicted here, the double-finned—is a sure sign of a divine entity, a Supernatural Being and the most powerful Being in the ocean.
Killer Whale is a race which dwells in the underwater realm, takes on human form when submerged, and has houses and towns much as does human society on land. SGaan, it is told, can capture canoes and take them underwater and when its humans occupants drowned they went to live with them transformed into whales.
Thus, Killer Whales seen near the shore are really transformed Humans trying to get in touch with their families.
