Beaver at SGaang Gwaay
On the southwestern tip of Haida Gwaii is the small remote island of SGang Gwaay (Red Cod Island) lying exposed to the open Pacific. The protected east side was home to the Kunghit Haida.
This place was declared a World Heritage Site of importance to the History of Mankind’ by the UNESCO committee.
In the Haida village of SGangwai Inag’i (Red Cod Island Town), standing in front of what was once ‘House that is Always Shaking’, owned by Chief K’u-iya’ns, (person always showing off his fine clothing), is a mortuary post that survived being badly burned, and yet still sings for whom it was created, an Eagle Clan member with Beaver as a crest.
