Beyond the Superfishial
Upon reaching natal rivers, the anadromous Tsíin—Salmon stop feeding. During this taxing journey the male develops a hooked nose in preparation for spawning. Eventually, their spirit leaves and their bodies supply the river ecosystem with nutrients and the seeds of a new generation will return to continue the cycle.
A Haida story tells of disrespect for this essential source of sustenance by a boy. He then was taken by the Salmon People and became known Salmon Boy, whose eventual return would be to teach what he learned. Tsíin are Supernatural Beings who live in human form in their ocean villages, they don their ‘salmon cloaks’ in the spring to feed the people as a gift. Honour the source of this precious food, and show the same respect to the natural world from which it comes—look beyond the superfishial.
In gratitude, every spring the first Tsíin bones are carefully cleaned and ceremoniously returned, pointed upriver to show the salmon’s spirit the way home.
