Cedar Sister
From her rainforest realm, Cedar Sister plays an essential role in demonstrating the gina waadluxan gud ad kwaagiida—interconnectedness of earth’s biome. In her shadow salmon spawn in the rivers, fertile eggs grow, hatch and gain strength to go to sea. Her canopy produces the oxygen we breathe.
When we embody giid tll’juus—the world is as sharp as the edge of a knife—balance prevails, we see her true value with the understanding that Cedar is our elder sister, acknowledging her not solely as a resource to be exploited for immediate monetary gain. When limited by the blinders of anthropocentric thinking, she has been sentenced to the axe. Never should an axe fell you, without honouring you.
My path makes this known to me—Earth is one great Being, with all living things a necessary part of the whole. In this instance, I show my yahguudang—respect for her and indeed all her lifeforms by giving thanks through heartfelt words and artistic expression to tell her story. I whisper, ‘Let me see you so that I can tell your story’—the visual language of art is the medium through which we can express our ‘laa guu ga kanhllnnn—responsibility to share whatever we see and experience, to be ‘eyes of society’ at large.
