Swainson’s Thrush
Wíid—Salmonberry Bird—Swainson’s Thrush, with clearly defined spots on its upper breast, is a member of the Catharus clan. This small ‘springtime bird’ travels from its southern winter home to its northern summer home mostly at night, their lyrical call trilling overhead on clear nights. After arrival they are often heard more than seen—their mellifluous voice, as a flute, in an ascending spiral.
Arriving on Haida Gwaii in spring the male establishes his territory on the forest’s edge, defending it by singing. Wíid Jaad then builds their dwelling near the adjoining salmonberry thickets. They will nourish their young on berries and insects ensuring the continuity of the cycle of life, reminding us to tread softly in the natural world.
Salmonberry Bird returns for the ripening of the first salmonberries. Listen to hear the wisdom in this Supernatural Being’s voice as it announces for us, ‘It is time to get ready to go to the west coast to catch spring salmon.
