Eagle of Yaan
The quickly moving ebb and flow carry the waters of Gaaw Kaahlii—Massett Inlet past the village of Yan, situated on the western edge where the mouth opens to Siigee—Dixon Entrance. The location is classic village site geography: a sheltered cove and a gravel beach, easing the launching and the landing of the tluu—Haida canoe; a thick kelp bed providing further protection, damping the wave action of the all too close and tempestuous open ocean. In the Haida language, Yaan means—directly opposite a ledge.
A weather beaten memorial pole, with a carved eagle on the top of a plain post, still stands before what once was Eyebrow House, owned by—The Island was Split by his Words, a member of the Totlka Eagles. Now, an enduring yet evanescent sentinel in an encroaching tide of sea grasses and salal, it looks out over the old canoe landing to the open waters of the Inlet.
