Exploring Gwaii Hanaas
The waters of Gwaii Haanas—Islands of Wonder welcome the barely perceptible paddle strokes as the kayak hugs the shore while rounding the rocky prominence at the end of the isthmus, and then dances through the kelp and into the shelter of the bay. The bow glides to, then slides up the pebble beach greeting the south facing village of Skedans Huasji-lanas —Grizzly Bear Town.
We see footprints lead into the silence, where the spirit of the past is palpable, where three Raven and two Eagle families called this ancient Haida village site home. Before they had to leave when their numbers plummeted with the spread of disease, at least 56 monumental red cedar poles and sculptures dominated the shoreline and spoke of the inhabitants lineages.
After a farewell, the flow tide washes away the superficial indentations in the fine pebbles, but the cerebral impressions reach to unfathomable depths.
