Looking out from beneath the beak and embraced by the protective wing of Eagle is Human. What sets this Being apart from all the others in this world are his hands.

The word stlanlaas, translated as ‘good with their hands’ is the closest equivalent in the Haida language to the honoured calling of Artist. The renowned Haida artist and Stastas Eagle Chief, Charles Edenshaw, when asked what he would like to leave his heirs replied, “my hands”.
